Side Effects and Nutrition Gaps on GLP-1 Medications

If you're taking Ozempic or Wegovy, you've probably found that a much smaller appetite doesn't automatically mean healthy weight loss. Nausea and digestive upset are common side effects, and for some people they get in the way of daily life. There's a quieter problem too: when you're eating far less food, what's in that food matters a lot more.

Many people on these medications lose weight quickly but also lose muscle, feel their energy dip, and find it hard to eat enough protein. A doctor may say "eat more protein," but when food feels unappealing, that's easier said than done.

The medication doesn't solve nutrition. It quiets appetite; it doesn't give you a plan for what to eat. When you're eating much less, every meal needs to count, and most people, and most traditional diet programs, aren't set up for that.

If you're on a GLP-1 medication now, your main job isn't to eat less. It's to make what you do eat carry more protein and fiber. That's the gap we built our food to fill.

What Medications Do and What Food Does

Here's what each approach does and doesn't do.

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are GLP-1 receptor agonists. They mimic a hormone your body makes to help regulate blood sugar and appetite. The medication version is strong: it slows stomach emptying, increases fullness signals to the brain, and reduces cravings.

What the medication can't do is choose your food. It doesn't deliver the protein your body needs while you eat much less, and protein is what helps you hold on to muscle during a calorie deficit. It doesn't teach you a way of eating. And for some people, the side effects make each day a negotiation.

Our approach is food built to support your body's own GLP-1 response. It isn't a substitute for a prescription. It works alongside a medication for people who take one, and on its own for people who don't.

The difference in mechanism: the medication supplies a strong version of the signal. Our food supports the signal your body already makes, using protein, fermentable fiber and smart fats, which all prompt your gut to release GLP-1.

Food also brings nutrition with it. Our daily targets are about 90 g of protein and about 30 g of fermentable fiber, which is the part that matters most for fullness, steady energy and keeping muscle.

Cost and Access

Cost and access are part of the decision, and they look different for each approach.

A GLP-1 medication requires a prescription and ongoing care from a doctor, and insurance coverage for weight loss varies by plan. Check your own coverage and costs with your insurer and your doctor.

Our food doesn't require a prescription. You order it, and breakfast, a snack and lunch arrive ready to eat each week. The One Month Health Reset adds a Hume Body Pod body-composition scale and weekly body-composition check-ins. Subscriptions can be paused, skipped, swapped or cancelled.

You can see what you're eating and why each part is there, and you build habits that stay with you.

If you're already on a medication, the food is an addition, not a replacement. If you're not, it's a food-based way to support your own appetite signals.

Protein, Nutrient Density and Keeping Muscle

This is where many diets fall short, and where we built ours differently.

When you lose weight quickly while eating very little, your body doesn't only burn fat. Without enough protein, some of what you lose is muscle. That matters beyond appearance: muscle supports strength, everyday function and how your body uses energy.

So we built the day around protein:

  • Breakfast: the GLP-1 Blueberry Muffin, with 18 g of protein
  • Snack: the GLP-1 Chocolate Chip Cookie, a craving-killer with under 20 g of carbs
  • Lunch: the GLP-1 Meal Replacement Bar
  • A serving of the GLP-1 Vanilla Protein Shake: 17 g of protein and 3 g of fiber
  • Dinner: you make it, with lean protein and non-starchy vegetables, aiming for 30 to 40 g of protein

The bundle alone gives you about 70 g of protein and about 30 g of fiber a day, and dinner brings protein to about 90 g. Together, protein and fiber keep you full longer while helping you keep muscle.

Fiber does more than help digestion. Fermentable fiber feeds your gut bacteria, which turn it into short-chain fatty acids that prompt GLP-1 release. It also slows digestion so fullness lasts. If you're used to far less, introduce it gradually over the first week; mild gas or bloating early on is normal and fades.

If you're on a GLP-1 medication, this kind of density matters even more. Your appetite won't remind you to eat. Food that's already portioned to your targets takes the guesswork out.

Building Habits That Last

Many people regain weight after stopping a GLP-1 medication. That isn't a willpower failure. The medication was supporting appetite control, and when it's gone, appetite often comes back.

Food works differently because it's something you keep doing. A way of eating built on protein, fermentable fiber and fat supports your own fullness signals every day, and the habit stays with you.

The first four weeks build the routine. After that, some people keep the muffin as breakfast and the cookie as their afternoon craving-killer. Others use what they've learned to cook their own meals the same way.

Eating this way also takes some engagement. You pick your dinner protein, you notice which meals keep you full, and with the Reset you check your body composition weekly. That awareness is what helps long term.

This applies if you're on a medication too. You're shaping the quality of your weight loss: keeping muscle, hitting your protein number, and building habits that last whatever you and your doctor decide about the medication.

Food is also flexible. The bars and muffins travel. If your week changes, you can pause, skip or swap a delivery.

How the Food Supports Your Own GLP-1

The plan rests on a few well-understood pieces of gut physiology.

Protein is a strong prompt for GLP-1. When protein reaches your small intestine, cells in the gut wall release GLP-1 in response. That's one reason high-protein meals keep you full longer, and why about 90 g a day is central to the plan.

Fermentable fiber works more slowly. Gut bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids, which also prompt GLP-1 release, and fiber slows how fast your stomach empties. About 30 g a day is the target, introduced gradually.

Fat slows digestion as well and makes a smaller meal more satisfying.

We built the food around those three: protein, fermentable fiber and smart fats, in food you'd actually want to eat every day. Everything is gluten-free and dairy-free, with no artificial ingredients, colors or preservatives.

What to Watch in Your First Four Weeks

Progress shows up in more places than the scale.

The plan sets 1,300 to 1,500 calories a day, about 90 g of protein, about 30 g of fermentable fiber, and 80 or more ounces of water. Within that, pay attention to how hungry you are between meals, how strong your afternoon cravings are, and how steady your energy feels through the day.

Body composition tells you more than weight. A regular scale can't show whether you're losing fat or muscle. That's why the One Month Health Reset includes the Hume Body Pod and weekly body-composition check-ins.

If you're on a GLP-1 medication, the food covers what the medication doesn't: getting enough protein to protect muscle when your appetite is small. If you're dealing with side effects, talk to your prescribing doctor about them.

A few rules help across the month: don't skip breakfast; use the cookie as a craving-killer, not a dessert; hit your protein number even if you skip a meal; and sleep well and stay lightly active, because both add to what the food is doing.

How Food and Medication Work Together

If you're on a GLP-1 medication, we're not suggesting you stop. Decisions about your medication belong with your doctor.

What we are saying is that the medication covers one part of the picture. It quiets appetite. Food covers the rest: protein, fiber, keeping muscle, steady energy and the habits that last.

For people on a medication, the food can help in a few ways:

  • It makes protein and fiber targets reachable when your appetite is small
  • With the Reset, weekly body-composition check-ins show whether you're losing fat or muscle
  • Ready-to-eat meals take daily food decisions off your plate
  • You build eating habits that last

For people who don't want a medication, the food stands on its own, supporting your body's own GLP-1 with protein, fermentable fiber and smart fats.

Either way, the aim is the same: lose weight in a way that keeps muscle and builds habits you can keep.

Getting Started

There are two ways in.

The Weekly GLP-1 Protocol bundle covers breakfast, a snack and lunch every day: 7 Blueberry Muffins, 7 Chocolate Chip Cookies, 7 Meal Replacement Bars and 7 servings of Vanilla Protein Shake each week. You make dinner.

The One Month Health Reset is four weekly bundles plus a Hume Body Pod and weekly body-composition check-ins, for people who want to track fat and muscle from the start. You can see both at theglp-1protocol.com.

If you're new to structured eating, the Reset gives you the most to work with. If you mainly want help hitting your protein and fiber targets, the weekly bundle covers that.

Everything is made in our own certified, dedicated gluten-free kitchen in Georgetown, Texas, and none of it requires a prescription.

Choosing Your Approach

The choice between a GLP-1 medication and food isn't really either-or. The useful question is whether you're relying only on appetite suppression or also building a way of eating that works with your body's own appetite signals.

Medications suppress appetite. Food supports it. That difference adds up over weeks and months.

If you're on Ozempic or Wegovy and struggling to eat well, food built around protein and fiber can fill that gap alongside your medication. If you'd rather not take a medication, food is a way to support your own GLP-1.

We built The GLP-1 Protocol because we saw the gap between what appetite medications do and what people still need to eat well. If you want to try it, start with the weekly bundle or the Reset.
